GR10A (CV5291)

Achtung!

GR10A (CV5291)

The GR10A (equivalent: CV5291) from the British manufacturer ETL is a register tube with an overall display height of app. 18mm, the single dots have a diameter of app. 1mm:

The GR10A in size comparison

As opposed to the common opinion, the GR10A is not a Dekatron tube. A Dekatron tube is a counting tube, that means the tube itself can count, so you can connect a frequency etc.; the GR10A is a mere display tube that has the special feature of point-shaped cathodes and not digit-shaped cathodes. That is why the GR10A looks like a Dekatron on the first glance.

Here you can see the original box of the GR10A:

The type number GR10A suggests that this tube is a display tube and not a counting tube, as all other display tubes have the GR prefix as well (e.g. GR10H, GR10K, GR10G, etc.). Futhermore, all Dekatron tubes from ETL have the prefix GC or GS.

The glowing digits of the GR10A do not look not too exciting:

This is how the GR10A looks like with all cathodes lit:

All Cathodes lit

This is not possible with a Dekatron, because with Dekatrons only one cathode can glow at a time (that is how they work as a matter of fact). On some pictures it can look like two or more cathodes are lit simultaneously in a Dekatron, but that is only due to the shutter speed of the camera or the slowness of visual processing.

Attention! In the ETL GR-series you can also find the GR10X. Do you possess these tubes, or do you happen to know a source for them? I would be glad if you dropped be an email. Attention!
