GL-LS-4

GL-LS-4

The Glow Lamp Lab Sample 4, or in short GL-LS-4, is an improved glow lamp construction that employs stainless steel electrodes next to the standard 9mm soda lime tubing and Dumet wire. The filling is air at 15mbar:

GL-LS-4

To prevent the stainless steel electrodes from touching, they have been fixed at a distance of about 1mm using some drops of glass:

The glass seems to follow the Dumet wires at the base. That is not a coincidence: prior to the pinch, the Dumet wires were given a glass envelope, thus greatly simplifying the overall sealing process. It would have been a good idea to have the glass envelope reach up to the stainless steel electrodes for a few mm so that the glas drops would have adhered much better to the stainless steel electrodes. It does not look very elegant the way it has been done instead:

The vacuum seal is still not perfect:

However, this glow lamp was a success with an ignition at the relatively high voltage of 550V:

In the lower image, the current is very high: 50mA. The GL-LS-4 heated up to approximately 100°C; shortly after that, a small spark leapt over. After that, the GL-LS-4 will glow only where the spark occured:

Even though the tube is driven by smoothed DC, the glow sometimes wanders for a short period of time:

However, this phenomenon is possibly transient; after a pause of several weeks, the glow is spreading evenly again:

This looks most impressive in the dark:

Comparing the color of the GL-LS-4 with the ones of the GL-LS-3 or GL-LS-6 reveals that she is much more blue and less violet. This might be due to the larger diameter of the stainless steel electrodes of the GL-LS-4, or their more reflecting surfaces. Another reason might be the outgassing of the stainless steel electrodes when heated up, changing the composition of the glow lamp's atmosphere and thus allowing for a change in color.
